KeaneAs a fan of the band Keane, I was looking out for their performance at the recent VH1 Honors show appearing on the internet - and now that it has, I’m a big fan of what they have done on their cover of the Genesis song That’s All. Okay, it’s not exactly a big departure from the original but that’s not always a bad thing - and it may help introduce Genesis to a new generation of listeners.

I used to have a couple of Genesis “Best of” CDs when I was younger, when it was definitely not cool to be listening to that kind of thing, but I liked it so didn’t really care what anyone else thought - and listening to this cover has made me want to go and look them out for another listen.

This, together with a recent Travis gig where they ended with a rendition of AC/DC’s Back in Black, got me to thinking about what the best cover versions were that I had heard lately. A quick search on Google shows there are loads of blogs and forums dedicated to arguing about which are best, but each to their own so this post has my own favourites of the moment.

Unfortunately, I can’t find any decent clips of Travis doing Back in Black on the net anywhere - the best is this clip presumably filmed on someone’s mobile, but the sound quality is pretty terrible. It sounded much better than this live!

Going slightly back in time a little, and the group accused of being the best Beatles tribute band in the world produced the best Beatles cover in the world when they wheeled out I Am The Walrus on an unsuspecting public - a song which even the Beatles were meant to shy away from playing live…

Without wanting to turn this into a Keane and Travis-fest, the last two covers are from these bands. The reason I’ve chosen these is because the song choiceis far from predictable and that’s the beauty of a cover version - bands can choose songs which don’t seem to suit their style and add their own twist. First up it’s Travis…

…and finally Keane, with my favourite recent cover…
