Over the years there has been many an advert made which has highlighted the association between a sports star and a product - as usual some good and some bad.  In the main I think it can be good to see a different side to people, get to know a bit more about their personality - assuming they have one…

Prior to Lewis, the sportsman who was an advertiser’s dream was David Beckham.  Although everyone is clambering to get a piece of Hamilton I’m sure Beckham is still up there in terms of lucrative sponsorship deals.

Of course, for a sports star who is involved in a team sport then advertisers can amalgamate players from a whole host of teams to create one or two super teams to reinforce that their brand is the best…

…and then there are the more humorous ads which like I said at the start, show a different side to the person than you normally see onscreen.  During the 1990s there were several ads made for Pizza Hut which had various sports personalities featured in them, where they literally made fools of themselves.  Most featured footballers who had famously missed penalties, but this one features a certain F1 commentator and Damon Hill…

Finally, we go back to Tiger Woods as his ads seem to be the best in my view - the ones where he is playing golf are amazing as his skill is simply unbelievable, and the ones where he is fooling around are equally as good because he seems a genuinely nice guy.  This ad gets the accolade of being the best I’ve seen from him yet, as it combines the two aspects nicely…
