October 2007

Apparently Lewis Hamilton was taken aback at the driver’s meeting prior to last week’s Chinese Grand Prix - some of the other drivers had the audacity to make negative comments about the McLaren driver and his behaviour on the track.

Do these drivers have a genuine grievance or were they simply spitting the dummy because they are jealous of what he has achieved so far in his very short F1 career?

Well let’s have a think about what they may be jealous of…

No, I’m not going to kick up a stink about the exorbitant price we have to pay in order to fill our cars with petrol or diesel - nor am I going to moan about the fact that those of us living in rural Britain (who could argue we need cars more as we have less public transport than elsewhere), actually have to pay more than our urban counterparts.

No, what is getting my goat at the moment is the way fuel pricing is displayed on the forecourts at garages the length and breadth of the country.

Ahead of next weekend’s title deciding showdown in Brazil, there are so many questions flying about.

Obviously, the big one is “Who will win the title?” and that is totally up in the air at the moment - all we can say for sure is that it will be a good battle and we won’t know the outcome until the very end of the race.  Even if Lewis is winning, there is always a chance he will make a mistake or something else will stop him from reaching the finishing line.

What has happened to Scottish football lately?

We are used to being dismissed as pretty rubbish in recent years, but just lately there seems to have been a bit of a resurgence in form for both our domestic teams in Europe and also for the national team in the Euro 2008 qualifiers.

It doesn’t always follow that success for domestic clubs will lead on to success for the international side as there are so many foreign players now involved with the teams here (and unfortunately we can’t then use them to play for Scotland!).  Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing is up to others to decide, but obviously something good has been happening behind the scenes to encourage homegrown talent which has now bourne fruit with Scotland’s international results in this campaign so far.

Last summer I decided to take up running (it’s really jogging, but that word sounds a bit limpwristed to me for some reason…) so two or three nights a week I would head off into the woods and put my body through some severe punishment before returning home feeling like a wreck.

Although I thought myself relatively fit, I had always shied away from running and had myself convinced that I couldn’t do it - perhaps part of the reason why I forced myself to give it a go.
