Why are criminals never as forthcoming as those on TV?

When I was a kid watching Scooby Doo and the likes there would be some terrible man doing despicable things, then Scooby and the gang would catch him red handed following which he would come over all guilty and confess everything.

Same with programmes like Poirot and Miss Marple - they would deduce who had done the deed before the bad guy spilled the beans at the first opportunity, even explaining away the things the detective couldn’t understand.

Nowadays in the real world, we get murderers and rapists who insist they have done nothing wrong even after they have been found guilty.  Admittedly there will be some people in jail who are indeed as innocent as they claim to be, but I would wager the majority are as guilty as sin yet would never admit it.

Why don’t people admit to their failings, why aren’t we a more honest nation?

If people were most honest by nature then everyone would know where they stood, and it would be so much easier to pick out the good people from the bad.  A lot of otherwise good people still can’t help but lie about things - although they seem to not realise what they are saying is actual a lie a lot of the time.

Small lies are meant to be okay apparently, but if you can’t trust someone to tell you the truth about something seemingly small and insignificant then why should you trust them on the big stuff?

We all do things that are wrong, and it can be an immediate and natural reaction to lie in order to limit the damage but in actual fact this will only make things worse in the long run.  After a bit of time to think, I would like to assume most people would be inclined to own up and tell the truth yet these criminals will have been awaiting trial for months and still don’t have the decency to admit what they have done.

I suppose it all boils down to the fact that if they admit it then they can’t lodge appeal after appeal in a bid to either be freed or have their sentence cut.

At the end of the day I don’t suppose we should expect murderers to be decent, when a decent person wouldn’t have murdered in the first place.
