Ye Cannae Shove Yer Granny
Posted by Craig under General with the tags bus • Granny • Music • school • Scottish • songFor one reason or another I was reminded of this song today - it’s something we used to sing when I was a youngster and we were heading off on a schooltrip somewhere on a bus.
Haven’t a clue who wrote it or whether I’m infringing on some copyright issues by printing the lyrics here, but never mind…
It’s called Ye Cannae Shove Yer Granny and is sung to the tune of She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain :-
Oh ye cannae shove yer Granny aff a bus,
Oh ye cannae shove yer Granny aff a bus,
Ye cannae shove yer Granny
For she’s yer Mammie’s Mammie,
Ye canna shove yer Granny aff a bus.
Oh ye canna shove yer Granny aff a bus,
Oh ye canna shove yer Granny aff a bus,
Oh ye canna shove yer Granny
Cos she’s yer Mammie’s Mammie
Oh ye canna shove yer Granny aff a bus.
Ye can shove yer ither Granny aff a bus.
Ye can shove yer ither Granny aff a bus.
Ye can shove yer ither Granny
Cos she’s yer Faither’s Mammy
Ye can shove yer ither Granny aff a bus.
Ye can shove yer Uncle Wullie aff a bus.
Ye can shove yer Uncle Wullie aff a bus.
Uncle Wullie’s like yer Faither
A harum-scarum blether,
Ye can shove yer Uncle Wullie aff a bus.
Ye can shove yer Auntie Maggie aff a bus.
Ye can shove yer Auntie Maggie aff a bus.
Auntie Meg’s yer Faither’s sister,
She’s naethin’ but a twister,
Ye can shove yer Auntie Maggie aff a bus.
But ye canna shove yer Granny aff a bus.
Oh ye canna shove yer Granny aff a bus.
Oh ye canna shove yer Granny,
Cos she’s yer Mammy’s Mammy,
Oh ye canna shove yer Granny aff a bus.
Oh, happy days!!

I spent six years growing up in Scotland and seeing that again has put a bvoad grin on my face. Cheers Craig!

@Keith: Must admit I had kinda forgotten all about the song until yesterday, but a smile crossed my lips too when I was recalling it!
Now, what about Stop the Bus I Need a Wee Wee? All the songs from my childhood seem to revolve around public transport for some reason!

The thing I don’t get about this song is that it kind of implies that its okay to shove everyone else off the bus! What a terrible moral for a song to have.

@doctorvee: Not quite everyone, only your dad’s relatives!!!
I’m pretty sure as children we didn’t worry much about morals, only liked the song because of it’s funny lyrics and catchy little tune.

We got to sing this song at school as well (though we never sang the lyrics about being able to shove other people off the bus; I think our school had a weird adaptation involving other stuff you can’t do instead). Brings back some good memories of bus journeys home after walking round the Peak District…
